  Avondale Galleries would like for you to know exactly what it is you are viewing and therefore we have included this page of art definitions.


 Original: one of a kind, unique to all the world.

 Limited Edition: (L.E.) limited to a relatively small number of copies.

 Open Edition: (O.E.) not limited to a specific number.

 Artist Proof: (AP) work, printed prior to a limited edition, usually limited to a small number of copies.

 Oil Transfer: (OT) a process to transfer a print to canvas, with the appearance of a painting.

 Giclée: a French term to describe an oil transfer process.

 Watercolor: (WC) an original, painted with watercolor media.

 Pastel: an original drawing, made of powdered pigment.

 Drawing: an original sketch by means of lines, an art technique.

 Serigraph: silk screens are used to make a color print.

 Lithograph: a print created using a plate or stone.

 Offset Lithograph: a massed produced print or poster.

 Etching: a print produced from an etched metal plate.

 Restrike Etching: a print taken from the original die, printed sometime after the original issue.

 Engraving: a print made from an engraved plate.

 Steel Point Engraving: a print made from an engraved steel plate.

 Paper Cast: a method of creating a three dimensional form using paper.

 Appraisal: an expert judgment on the value or merit of.

 Insurance appraisal: an appraisal which includes replacement cost, description, and condition of a piece as of a certain date.

 Art Cataloguing: a catalogue of a persons' art collection that includes insurance appraisals, photographs, and biographies of the artists in that collection.
